Big Point

I can choose the door of joy

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. -Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Parent Discussion

The kids learned this from the Bible story – Paul and Silas in Prison. We learned that Paul and Silas chose joy when they sang songs and prayed to God even though they were in a bad situation. We want the kids to remember that we can choose to have joy even during hard times too!

Paul and Silas chose to worship God even though they were badly mistreated and forced to be in a stinky, dirty prison. Instead of choosing to be sad or angry about their situation, Paul and Silas chose to sings songs to God and continued to praise Him. They also shared their love for Jesus with the jailer from the prison.

Take some time to go through these discussion questions this week with your child. This will help reinforce our teaching objective which is “I can choose to have joy.”

  1. Did Paul and Silas choose to have joy in prison? How?
  2. Can we choose joy even when we don’t feel happy?
  3. When are times I don’t feel happy? How can I remember to have joy during these hard times?
