Read (20 mins):

Read Genesis 14:17-24

After Abram wins the war and returns with all that had been taken, two kings present themselves to him: the king of Sodom (whose city had been plundered by those whom Abram has now defeated) and the king of Salem (peace, Shalom).

How do these kings approach Abram? What do you notice about their priorities and motivation? How do they treat Abram?

How does Abram respond to each of these kings? What is the difference between Abram’s giving a tithe (10%) to Melchizedek and returning everything to the king of Sodom?

In what ways might you be holding onto the booty of Sodom? How does holding onto the wealth of Sodom affect the way you might retain the tithe that honours God?

What are some practical ways in which we can check our hearts when it comes to the way we think about wealth and possessions?

Respond (20 mins):

Spend a few minutes in personal reflection. What is the Holy Spirit impressing on your heart? (3 mins)

Take time to share how the Holy Spirit is challenging you. How can you be accountable to each other? Consider keeping a record for the purposes of prayer and accountability. (12 mins)

Pray for each other. (5 mins)
