NLEC – a brief history

New Life Evangelical Church was formerly known as the Cantonese Congregation of Evangelical Chinese Church Melbourne (ECCM). Our first Sunday Service was held at ECCM on Elgar Road, Box Hill in November 1986 at 2:30pm.

From June 1989 our Sunday Services were held at 10:30am in the Pastor’s House.

To cater for the growing Congregation, in April 1992 we hired and moved our Sunday Service to the performing arts auditorium of Koonung Secondary College across the road.  In September 1995, our Congregation together with the ECCM English Congregation moved into the present church premises in Blackburn South.

To meet the spiritual needs of the children of our Congregation, we started our Second Generation English Service in 2003.

In response to encouragement from the ECCM Council, we incorporated and registered with the government as the New Life Evangelical Church in July 2005 and became a member church of ECCM.

Meanwhile, we started our Gospel outreach activities to the Mandarin speaking communities in 2005, and in June 2006 the Sunday Service of our Mandarin Congregation commenced.

In February 2007 we set up our Community Care ministry.

All in all, in order to meet the Gospel needs of Chinese migrants and the unique needs of the second generation of Chinese believers, we have formally embarked on witnessing for God and edifying disciples through the use of  “two written (English and Chinese) and three spoken languages (English, Cantonese and Mandarin).”

We have adopted a multi-generational approach among our different congregations, and adhered to the interactive, interdependent and autonomous principles, so as to enable the three congregations to complement each other and serve God together, for the purpose of helping more people to understand the Gospel and become disciples of our Lord.

Our English and Mandarin Congregations are currently conducting their services at different hired locations. This has caused inconvenience and impacted on the development of ministry work. Therefore, since 2006, we have been planning for a church building to enable our three congregations to conduct their services and activities under one roof.

Praise the Lord for His leadership.  In 2016 we purchased a block of land in Bayswater, and in 2021 we obtained government approval to build our church. We have moved another step forward, and are now fundraising before commencing the construction work.

From the establishment of our Church till now, God has been leading us. In relation to the building of our new church, our three congregations will continue to rely on the help from the Holy Spirit, witnessing for God with our heart to bring more people to God and share His blessings of eternal life together.

May Glory be to our Lord!
