It is a section that is often skipped and difficult both to stomach and understand. Sitting above the detail of these stories is the overall story of the interaction between God and humans. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah mirrors the destruction of the flood. It is an enactment of God’s righteous judgement of sin, the curse of death. God washes (burns) away the blight of sin on His perfect creation, graciously giving humanity a new beginning, a new chance to be fruitful and multiply life under God. In this story, we see a horrific distortion of the command to fecundity. As with Noah, wine has severely impaired judgement and the children have dishonoured their father and done what should not be done. The chance for new and free life under God has been rejected by humanity. They will continue to live under their own rule.

Lot went from ruling in the sinful city to fearfully living in a cave. How do these choices reflect the state of his faith in God? In what ways can we choose to “rule in the sinful city” and “fearfully live in a cave”? How could Lot have responded faithfully?

It is easy to be disgusted by Lot’s daughters’ actions, but their decision makes good sense to them. How do Lot’s daughters decide on their action (what is the basis)? What is the danger of basing your decisions on the prevailing wisdom of the culture?

Where do you find it difficult to follow the wisdom of God? Where do you find the prevailing wisdom of culture most tempting to follow?

Respond (20 mins):

Spend a few minutes in personal reflection.
